This marks a return to the pinnacle for New Zealand's national carrier, having previously held the title in 2022. Qantas, the Australian carrier that secured the top spot last year, now holds the second position on the list. Virgin Australia, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways complete the top five in this year's rankings.
AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas emphasized, "Our top 25 safest airlines in 2024 are always at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence, and the launching of new, more advanced aircraft," highlighting models like the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and Boeing 777-9. The safety evaluation considered various factors, such as crash history over the last five years, serious incidents in the past two years, industry and government audits, fleet age, and crew training. In a closely contested competition, Air New Zealand secured its lead over Qantas, partially due to the latter's fleet age.
In the United States, only Alaska Airlines secured a position in the top 25, ranking at No. 10. Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines also made the list at No. 21, No. 22, and No. 25, respectively. This performance is notably lower than the previous year when Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines all secured positions in the top 20.
